Sullivan Conard Architects designed the Washington Park Residence in Seattle, Washington. The luxurious home is located on a bluff, allowing for panoramic views of Lake Washington, the Eastside and Cascades.
The architects used mass and transparency accordingly, hoping to provide the clients access to the view without compromising their privacy. The concrete walls, which are thermally insulated, are layered to allow a framed view from the west-facing rooms. In terms of transparency, the architects chose to install floor-to-ceiling windows and doors on the east side of the house. They open towards a stone terrance, providing a level of unity and cohesion.
Meanwhile, a green roof reduces storm water excess, and a geothermal heating system abates the consumption of fossil fuels.
