Waankarn is a restaurant and events space in Khao Lak, Thailand, designed by Studio Locomotive to serve both visitors and the local community. The building is wrapped in Ceylon ironwood louvres that naturally filter light and ventilation into two double-height interiors while responding to the region's tropical climate. A central stepped concrete corridor functions as both a circulation route and a flexible exhibition space, connecting the main dining room and bar with community programming.
The project combines exposed concrete, granite flooring, and repurposed local materials, including salvaged industrial steel and reclaimed clay roof tiles sourced from a traditional home in the area. A mezzanine walkway links the hospitality spaces before extending onto rooftop terraces surrounded by concrete planters.
