Urban Greenhouse-Topped Buildings

Kuehn Malvezzi Boasts a Transclucent Emphasis to an Urban Block

As cities are focusing on sustainability, the urban greenhouse becomes a desirable design element. Architecture firms are focusing on providing city infrastructure with natural motifs that will elevate the stoic and often unwelcoming atmosphere of concrete buildings. One of the most recent examples of this is a "warehouse-style block" in Oberhausen, Germany.

The building boasts a job center, as well as spaces for the Fraunhofer Institute for Environmental Safety and Technology (UMSICHT). In the courtyard of the development, as well as on its roof, Kuehn Malvezzi creates an urban greenhouse with steal frames which aesthetically, adds a sense of nature to the building, while functionally -- it will serve as space for agricultural research. The urban greenhouse was completed in partnership with Haas Architekten and Atelier Le Balto.
