The Uneri Capsiule is a Series of Handcrafted Seating and Tables

The Uneri furniture collection was created by Tokyo-based studio Sotanaka as a five-piece furniture series built from naturally shaped camphor and Zelkova branches. The collection includes a low coffee table, two side tables, a stool and a chair, each combining smooth geometric surfaces with branching structural frames finished in matte black enamel. The handcrafted joinery system was developed specifically for the collection, allowing every branch to retain its natural form while creating stable connections without standardizing the material.

The oval tabletops and seats contrast with the irregular frameworks beneath, highlighting the natural texture and varied intersections of the wood. The chair extends a rear branch into a continuous support for its circular backrest, while the coffee table uses an overlapping lattice of branches beneath its oval top. The matte enamel coating creates a uniform appearance while preserving the contours of the wood.

Trend Themes

  1. Organic Structural Furniture — Naturally irregular branches paired with refined surfaces point to premium furniture categories where material uniqueness becomes a defining feature rather than a production challenge.
  2. Handcrafted Joinery Systems — Custom connection methods for nonstandard materials create room for new fabrication models that preserve organic forms while meeting functional stability requirements.
  3. Nature-contrast Aesthetics — The blend of matte black finishes, geometric tops, and raw branch frameworks reflects growing demand for interiors that balance sculptural naturalism with contemporary minimalism.

Industry Implications

  1. Furniture Design — Limited-run collections built around found or naturally shaped materials offer differentiation for brands seeking alternatives to mass-produced uniformity.
  2. Interior Design — Statement pieces with visible organic structures support hospitality, retail, and residential spaces looking to convey craft, texture, and biophilic sophistication.
  3. Woodworking and Craft Manufacturing — Specialized techniques for stabilizing irregular wood forms suggest opportunities for artisan workshops and small manufacturers to develop higher-value production capabilities.
