China is considering building the world’s longest undersea tunnel in the Bohai Sea.
If completed, the tunnel will be longer than the world’s current two longest undersea tunnels -- the Channel Tunnel that connects the U.K. and France, and Japan’s Seikan Tunnel.
China’s proposed tunnel will be 123 kilometers (76 miles) long and connect the cities of Dalian and Yantai via the Bohai Sea. The tunnel will carry a rail link that will cut travel time between the two cities from eight hours by ferry to just 40 minutes by train.
It is hoped that the project will address the challenges of heavy road traffic between the cities and boost tourism in the area.
Proposals for the $36 billion project are set to be submitted to China’s government in April. If approved, construction will begin in 2015 and will be completed in 2026.
