Off-Putting Tree Sculptures

Giuseppe Penone's Trees Play with the Limits Between Man and Nature

Decorating the Palace of Versailles is no easy task but Italian artist Giuseppe Penone managed with a series of magnificent tree sculptures.

The wooden installations are composed entirely of natural material and play with the relationship between the natural and unnatural. According to the artist, his motivation behind the sculptures came from what happens when "the work of man starts to become nature."

As a result of his peculiar fascinations, Penone's works seem natural at first glance except for a small off-putting detail. One such work looks like a regular tree until you notice that it's completely inverted. Other trees look normal except for large boulders that seem to have unexplainably found their way to high ground.
