MCK Architects designed the 'River House,' a home located by the Lane Cove River in Sydney, Australia.
The site, though incredibly beautiful, posed many challenges for the architects. In order to gain valuable space, the architects created a floating datum, which they then duplicated and used to cover the original. The result is two parallel floor plates that levitate over the basement walls. The shingle box on the ground floor remains inactive, for the most part, on the river side of the site.
On the suburban side, the home adheres to a more rectilinear form to correspond with its suburban context. However, on the other side, the shape becomes more fluid and organic, reflecting the river inspiration.
