The Jungle Offices Reinterpret 1990s NY Offices Across Four Floors

Mil Studios has completed the Jungle offices in Madrid, a 2,850-square-metre headquarters for the creative agency located inside the Madnum tower. Drawing inspiration from New York corporate offices and creative studios of the 1990s, the project divides the workplace into four distinct levels, each defined by its own material palette and atmosphere.

The executive 14th floor features wood panelling, curved forms, and softly lit spaces including a circular lounge and the marble-clad Mad Men meeting room. On the 13th floor, galvanised steel surfaces create a more technical environment influenced by the early digital era.

The remaining floors explore different references from the decade. Floor 12 introduces colour gradients, glossy finishes, and social spaces informed by 1990s club culture, while the 11th floor incorporates oxidised steel corridors and graphic tiled seating areas inspired by minimalist interiors of the period.

Trend Themes

  1. Retro Workplace Aesthetics — A resurgence of 1990s-inspired finishes and motifs in modern offices creating opportunities for products and experiences that blend nostalgia with contemporary workplace needs.
  2. Layered Material Zoning — Material-driven segmentation across floors, where distinct palettes and tactile treatments redefine spatial hierarchy and enable new modular fit-out systems tailored to varied work modes.
  3. Nostalgic Tech-design Fusion — The juxtaposition of analogue-era design cues with early-digital references suggests room for interfaces and hardware that marry retro visuals with modern connectivity and productivity features.

Industry Implications

  1. Office Interior Design — Design firms can capitalize on demand for curated period-inspired workplaces by offering specialized material libraries and bespoke furnishing lines that evoke specific decades.
  2. Corporate Real Estate — Landlords and developers are positioned to differentiate assets through thematically zoned floors and experiential leasing models that target creative and tech tenants seeking distinctive identities.
  3. Workplace Technology Providers — Vendors of AV, lighting, and smart-office systems have scope to integrate retro-styled hardware and intuitive control schemes that preserve aesthetic authenticity while delivering modern performance.
