The Floating House is a residence designed by SMStudio and completed in 2023 on Bowen Island, British Columbia. Positioned on the western ridge of the island, the house sits between two burnt old-growth tree stumps that were preserved as part of the site. The structure is elevated above the bedrock through a cantilevered design that creates a shadow gap beneath the building. A steeply pitched gable roof, steel standing-seam cladding, and cedar exterior walls define the building's form. The asymmetrical plan is organized across two wings that respond to changes in elevation between a forested ridge and an open field.
Douglas fir surfaces are used throughout the interior, where large openings frame views of the surrounding landscape. Natural light enters from multiple directions and is filtered by the adjacent forest. The exterior cedar cladding is intended to weather naturally over time. The house was designed to fit within the existing topography rather than alter it through extensive site modifications.

Trend Themes
-
Terrain-adaptive Homes — Residences that conform to steep, rocky, or forested sites signal potential for premium housing models that reduce excavation, preserve land character, and expand buildable terrain.
-
Low-impact Cantilevering — Elevated structures with shadow gaps and minimal ground contact create new possibilities for architecture that protects fragile ecosystems while delivering dramatic spatial experiences.
-
Weathering Material Palettes — Natural cedar, steel cladding, and exposed timber interiors reflect growing demand for buildings that evolve visually over time and reduce reliance on high-maintenance finishes.
Industry Implications
-
Residential Architecture — Custom home design is being reshaped by site-specific forms that treat landscape constraints as defining features rather than obstacles to conventional construction.
-
Sustainable Construction — Minimal site disturbance, preserved natural features, and durable material choices point to scalable building systems for environmentally sensitive residential development.
-
Luxury Real Estate — Remote forest homes with immersive views and distinctive structural concepts suggest a market for experiential properties where ecological integration increases perceived value.
