The Familiar robot pet is a four-legged companion robot developed by Familiar Machines & Magic, the new startup founded by former iRobot CEO Colin Angle. Designed with the help of former Disney Imagineers, the prototype features large paws, expressive eyes, and 23 degrees of freedom that allow it to tilt its head, wag its tail, and react with fluid, animal-like movement. Its soft exterior is covered in touch-sensitive fur intended to encourage physical interaction rather than command-based use.
Unlike voice assistants or humanoid robots, the Familiar avoids spoken conversation and instead responds to tone, body language, and environmental cues through nonverbal behavior. The robot runs on an onboard AI system designed to adapt to household routines and emotional patterns over time without relying heavily on cloud processing. Familiar Machines & Magic describes the project as a new category of "Consumer Physical AI" focused on companionship, emotional presence, and long-term interaction within the home.
