The Drop Light by Teixeira Design Studio is 3D printed from Recycled PLA

The Drop Light is a 3D printed desk lamp designed by Teixeira Design Studio in collaboration with Oftwise Studio, produced entirely from recycled, plant-based PLA. The lamp is split across two surface treatments within a single material: the base and integrated top tray carry a fuzzy, matte, scratch-resistant texture, while the shade is printed smooth and semi-translucent to scatter light evenly without exposing the light source. The tray at the base is built into the silhouette of the lamp and functions as a storage surface for small desk objects. No secondary material is introduced across the lamp's construction.

The Drop Light is designed by João Teixeira, a Portugal-based furniture designer who heads Teixeira Design Studio and has previously collaborated with Gantri on 3D printed lighting. Plant-based PLA is a polyester derived from non-petroleum plant sources, and the recycled formulation used in the Drop Light contributes a warmth of finish that petroleum-based plastics do not produce. Trend Themes

  1. Recycled PLA Product Design — Designs produced from recycled, plant-based PLA open pathways for mainstream products with lower carbon footprints and premium tactile finishes that rival petroleum plastics.
  2. Single-material Multi-finish Manufacturing — A single-material approach that yields contrasting textures and translucencies within one print enables simplified recycling streams and more cohesive end-of-life strategies.
  3. Integrated Storage Lighting — Lighting that combines functional storage surfaces with soft, diffused illumination offers compact, multi-functional solutions for small-space work and hospitality environments.

Industry Implications

  1. Furniture Design — Small-scale furniture and accessory makers stand to benefit from 3D printed, recycled-material components that offer bespoke finishes and integrated utility without complex assembly.
  2. Additive Manufacturing — AM firms are positioned to capitalize on process innovations that print multi-textured parts in a single run, reducing material waste and accelerating customization workflows.
  3. Sustainable Consumer Goods — Brands focused on eco-friendly consumer products can differentiate through recyclable, plant-based materials that provide warm aesthetics typically associated with higher-end finishes.
