The Carapace by Arnaldo Pomodoro is a literal representation of its name and embodies the look and texture of the back of a giant turtle -- or the Earth, depending on one's interpretation.
The building is the Italian sculptor's first large-scale architectural venture and both the materials used, and its reference to a slow-moving snapper, are grandiose and awe-inspiring.
Constructed on the Castelbuono Estate in Umbria, Italy, the enormous copper dome features giant cracks that filter in natural light and ventilate the facility (while also staying true to the reptilian feel of the design aesthetic.)
The giant sphere spans 115' by 92' and sits atop of a 30 hectare wine vineyard. Inside the dome is an open concept interior that acts as a social gathering spot for visitors to taste the wine while taking in a panoramic view of the grounds. Beneath the giant building rests an enormous wine cellar that stretches 33'.
Pomodoro has said that the vision behind the massive building was to create unity between the Earth and the sky and that the tortoise is a perfect representation of the slow-paced solidity of country life.
