To simplify the checkout process, many grocery stores are now leveraging technology to optimize grab-and-go convenience—this includes Dutch supermarket chain Albert Heijn with its 'Tap to Go' technology.
Unlike many supermarket systems that solely rely on an app, Tap to Go works alongside smart NFC-enabled shelf labels. After a consumer has registered via an app, they are then able to shop as usual, but tap a physical card to the shelf labels as they pick up the items they wish to purchase. In a matter of minutes, the money will be automatically transferred from their bank account, making it possible for shoppers to skip the long lines.
Testing for the Tap to Go system was introduced more quickly than anticipated, but as Jan-Willem Dockheer, Managing Director of 'AH to go' stores sees it: "Technology is changing rapidly. So why wait? The sooner we can start, the more we can learn."
