Storey Battery Packaging is a Plastic-Free Packaging System

Storey Battery packaging is a plastic-free packaging system designed by Propeller Design for Sunology's residential energy storage unit. Developed to protect the 30.5-kilogram battery during shipping, the solution replaces conventional foam and plastic components with a fully fiber-based construction using honeycomb board, paperboard corner reinforcements, and paper straps. The packaging complements the battery's minimalist industrial design while supporting recyclable materials throughout the shipping system.

The structural honeycomb board distributes weight to protect the battery during transport, while paper straps secure the unit and incorporate reusable elements, including a tagged cable strap. Designed to deliver a premium unboxing experience without plastic, the packaging demonstrates how fiber-based materials can meet the structural demands of large consumer products. The Storey Battery, which received the BIG SEE Grand Prix 2026 Design Award, extends its sustainability-focused approach from the product itself to its protective packaging.

Trend Themes

  1. Plastic-free Heavy Packaging — Fiber-based structures for high-weight products reveal new possibilities for replacing foam and plastic in durable shipping systems.
  2. Sustainable Unboxing Design — Premium packaging experiences built around recyclable materials create differentiation for brands balancing aesthetics, protection, and environmental goals.
  3. Reusable Paper Components — Integrated paper straps and tagged reusable elements point to circular packaging models that extend material value beyond delivery.

Industry Implications

  1. Energy Storage — Residential battery makers can strengthen sustainability positioning by aligning protective packaging with clean energy product values.
  2. Packaging Design — Design studios have growing opportunities to engineer fiber systems that meet industrial performance standards without relying on plastics.
  3. Consumer Electronics — Large-format device manufacturers may adopt paper-based protection to reduce waste while preserving premium presentation and transit safety.
