These Small Symbolic Houses are Propped Up on Stilts

Structurally, a stilt house may not be the best idea for those looking to live in safety. Luckily, actual habitation isn’t the point of these houses, which are designed by Javier Requejo. These stilt houses are symbolic for a variety of things in its native Spain.

‘Palafitos’ is the name of the exhibit and it’s quite simple in design. The houses are quite small as they’re not meant for literal usage. What they do represent is the economical situation in Spain currently. Spain is a country struck by the European economic crisis and its residents are feeling it.

The shaky foundation is the basis for the stilts in this installation but there’s more. The houses are all black with the purpose of evoking a feeling of sadness, hopelessness and mourning from viewers.
