Fleeting Light Paintings

Steve Carty Captures Graffiti Artist Skam for Contact 2010

For the 2010 Scotiabank Contact Photography Festival, Toronto photographer Steve Carty collaborates with graffiti artist Skam in the series 'Lightworkers.'

Skam puts aside his typical can of spray paint and picks up a flashlight for 'Lightworkers.' Reworking the illegal aspect of street graffiti as a form of vandalism, the graffiti created in Carty’s current work exists only in a single frame of the photograph.

The video shows Steve Carty photographing Skam's light painting and fittingly features Common’s song 'The Light.'
