Splinter by Nendo is a new line of wooden furniture created by the Japanese design house for Conde House. Conde House is a furniture manufacturer located in Asahikawa, the country’s wooden furniture region. Splinter consists of tables and chairs, a coat rack and mirrors.
The series gets its name from the process used to create the furniture. Nendo literally splintered the wood it used to create these pieces. Larger pieces were kept intact to provide structural support, and the thinner strips were peeled away and used for the furniture’s more delicate features. The piece that best shows this process in action is the coat rack. Upon closer inspection, you can see what looks to be a large piece of wood split and peeled into smaller sections.
