The Spijkenisse Book Mountain Places Shelves Atop One Another

The Spijkenisse Book Mountain has been completed in the Netherlands-based public square. The stacks of book shelves store diverse collections within the sleek pyramid, piling shelves on top of one another in a way that is seldom seen in the library niche.

Architects at MVRDV executed the Spijkenisse Book Mountain. Modeled after a "mountain of rocks," the group aimed to encourage reading by engaging visitors with the works of literature. The artistic space provides a much needed alternative to standard libraries which are frequently void of inspiration and creativity.

MVRDV and the Spijkenisse Book Mountain hope to further foster an "exemplary eco-friendly neighborhood." The interior posts are made of used flowerpots and recycled brick, glass and wood pieces, promoting green practices in the surrounding area.
