In an attempt to raise environmental awareness and expedite the adoption of clean energy sources, the Maintenance Department of Dubai is replacing all municipal bathrooms with new, solar-powered toilets.
Fluorescent lights and exhaust fans will have to be removed from several thousand municipal bathrooms, leaving solar cells with the responsibility of powering the lights, hot water and pumps. Although the concept of solar-powered toilets remains exclusive to Dubai, officials are eager to share their success with the other six emirates.
However, this kind of endeavor isn’t rare in Dubai. In fact, the government of Dubai is funding the development of a new, solar-powered city in the desert called Masdar. And it doesn’t end there: Plans exist to shift most public services away from dirty power sources and toward green energy!
