The SMOS Probe May Pinpoint Floods and Droughts

Launched from a Russian rocket, the Soil Moisture and Salinity (SMOS) probe was sent into outer space today by the European Space Agency.

The SMOS probe is a satellite that can measure global levels of soil moisture, plant growth, and ocean salt that could help to pinpoint the locations and risks of future droughts and floods. Interestingly enough, the launch of the SMOS probe comes on the heels of another probe, NASA's carbon dioxide-mapping satelliteâ€"which crashed to Earth shortly after launching.
