Anti-Assault Drug-Detecting Straws

The Smart Straw Seeks to Prevent Date Rape By Identifying Drugs

The Smart Straw was invented by three high school students named Susana Cappello, Carolina Baigorri, and Victoria Roca – who were seeking to lower the chances of people getting date raped while they are out at bars and clubs.

The Smart Straw, which may have to change its name to the Safety Straw, is able to detect two different drugs that are used in instances of date rape. While the straw is not a foolproof method of preventing sexual assaults that are initiated by spiking victims' drinks, as there are other drugs that rapists use, the teenage inventors are hoping to as least lower the likelihood of people, particularly women, being assaulted.

Although understanding that the Smart Straw is not a solution to sexual assault, it is a step in the right direction for people who want to stay vigilant when they are out.
