Skill Forest Climbing Net Makes the Hakone Pavillion a Magical Place

The Skill Forest climbing net is a recent addition to the Hakone Open-Air Museum. The rope climbing net is suspended like a colorful spider’s web in the Hakone Pavilion, an architectural marvel made of stacked timber logs. Complete with spider-egg-sac-like ball swings near the floor, and portals to interior sliding tubes, the mesh of sensory provocation affords children the chance to work out their wiggles and learn through play.

Artist Toshiko Horiuchi Macadam created the Skill Forest climbing net as an interactive design for children. By locating the vibrant climbing net within the composition of the Hakone stacked log pavilion, the artist deliberately raises the intensity of the children’s play experience. She funnels the sense of being outside, surrounded by nature, into the enclosed play space with non-verbal cues from the log containment and the webbed design of the Skill Forest climbing net.
