The beautiful Sítio da Lezíria presented its designer, Atelier Data, with compelling possibilities. The project began by stripping the once-functional horse stable down to its bare structure and reworking it to accommodate a family.
It's wonderful to see that the creative team kept the floor plan of the Portuguese summer house fairly consistent with the original one, featuring a long central corridor that runs from end to end. The rooms on either side of the hallway maintain equal widths, mimicking the regular separate stalls that were originally in place. These open up to the 'horse path' passage and out towards the rural grounds along the dwelling's exterior walls.
Throughout the Sítio da Lezíria's interior, you can see the continuous open attic space with lovely white-painted rafters. The axial circulation can be closed off at will by shutting the wooden barn doors down the corridor.
