Photographer Shelly Mosman Relies on "Spontaneity of Circumstance"

Although the photographic works of Shelly Mosman may seem staged at first, they are far from unauthentic. The Minneapolis-based photographer relies "on the spontaneity of circumstance," in her own words, to capture intensely personal portraits of her subjects. Often with a dark undertone, Shelly Mosman ensures that she spends a lot of her time with her models before shooting in order to come across key moments.

Currently on Kickstarter to raise funds for her exhibition, Mercury, Shelly Mosman may have embraced the world of photography only two years ago, but she has been shooting for over 20 years. She reveals, "My infatuation with dark places started when I was really young. I was actually inspired by a very old mid-century painting." Her work does have a vintage aesthetic.
