Beers for Social Good

Exotic Drinks at the Shebeen Bar Benefit Developing Nations

When Shebeen Bar launches in Melbourne, Australia, we bet tons of people will be flocking in -- not just because they will serve different kinds of exotic beer, but because every drink purchased will make the world a little more. Specifically, $2 from each drink will go toward a project in the country of the beer's origin. Not a bad excuse to hit the local watering hole.

The non-profit bar, launched by 20-something social entrepreneur Simon Griffith, is working hard to generate enough funds to open. They've launched a quirky website filled with irony and fun, from animated flying cats to email addresses starting with meow@ to help spread the word and let people donate. The lighthearted theme is a refreshing twist on a cause-oriented business.

"We're not about guilt-motivated purchases," the told The Age. "It's about, 'Wow, this is a kick ass space, I want to go there'.

"We are moving away from the Oxfam tin-rattling approach to retail to a space where we create high-quality products and services and make them non-profit."

In the meantime, they are selling Shebeen beer to local venues including Rice Queen, which sells Huda their Vietnamese beer, Panama Dining, which sells their Negra Modelo beer, and Madame Brussels which serves St. George, their Ethiopian beer.
