Retractable Wing Transport Hubs

The Santiago Calatrava WTC PATH is set for Completion in 2015

Architecture firm Santiago Calatrava is hard at work ensuring the WTC PATH is going up accurately and efficiently. The design is set for completion at some point in 2015.

A few roadblocks were hit along the way for the design, which was submitted over 10 years ago by the architecture firm. Steel prices were hiked up significantly, and considering most of the transport hub is made from this material, the budget was forced to increase. After a few complications, the approval was made and more headway was done on the design.

The amazing part about this design is its retractable steel wings, which allow natural light to pass through. The wings are massive, and it's tough to imagine them even having the ability to retract at all, but Santiago Calatrava has made this happen. Photo Credits: designboom, wtc
