The Santagiulia Arena by David Chipperfield Architects hosts ice hockey at the Milan Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics as a new, multipurpose venue situated in the redeveloped Santa Giulia district of Milan. Designed in collaboration with Arup, the arena accommodates up to approximately 16,000 spectators and takes its form from an elliptical outline that echoes the historic Roman amphitheatre, with stacked metal rings and bands of glazing wrapping around the exterior to balance solid volume and transparency. The arena sits atop a raised podium that integrates entrances, services, and a public piazza of more than 10,000 square metres, which can be used for outdoor events and community gathering before and after competitions.
The design incorporates sustainable strategies including photovoltaic panels on the roof and efficient systems to support event requirements, and the interior programme includes two spectator tiers, lounges, skyboxes and circulation zones that support smooth crowd movement. After the Games, the Santagiulia Arena is intended to function as a flexible venue for sports, concerts and cultural events
