Bloody Political Performances

Sangre Menstrual Create a Stir with Their Bold Performance

Wanting to get rid of the social sigma that still exists concerning women's periods, Spain-based performance collective Sangre Menstrual created a stir with their bold and bloody public street performance.

Taking over streets in fake menstrual blood stained pants, the politically motivated performance tried to shed the taboo around the still-backwards notions of the period. Physically imitating the shedding uterine lining, Sangre Menstrual wants to prove that women should feel no shame about their natural bodily function as they state in their manifesto: "I stain [my pants], and it doesn’t make me sick. I stain [my pants] and I don’t find it disgusting."

The blood-stained performance is trying to both kill the taboo of the period and use the female body as a political act of defiance.
