Playpen-Integrated Homes

The S Residence Makes Room for Furry Family Members

Tokyo architect Soichi Yamasaki designed the 'S Residence' for a family with three dogs. Yamasaki included a dog pen in the living area, allowing the pets to be involved in the family life without running amok throughout the home. The enclosure, which is fenced by wood and stainless steel railings, is situated on a slightly different level to prevent pet dander and hair from spreading.

Beyond accommodating for their pets, the owners wanted the home to be strongly integrated with the outdoor garden. Yamasaki explains, "To integrate the living space with the garden, I created an L-shaped box to enclose the garden and connected them by having full-height windows."

The ground floor level and garden are raised above the rood via a concrete plinth, ultimately enhancing the view.
