Luminous Ribbon-Inspired Bridges

The 'Ribbon of Light' Bridge Will Replace Aging Infrastructure

Michael Maltzan Architecture's new 'Ribbon of Light' bridge is set to break ground in Los Angeles. Following in the footsteps of other cities, the new project will bring aging city infrastructure into the modern era.

The Ribbon of Light bridge is part of an effort to replace the aging Art-Deco Sixth Street Viaduct that runs across the city of Los Angeles. The new bridge will be 3,500 feet in length and it will span from downtown to the Boyle Heights neighborhood. The bridge will accommodate not only traffic, but also bicycles and pedestrians looking for a way across the Los Angeles River and other busy roadways. The bridge itself boasts a ribbon-like shape, with concrete arches spanning the entire length of the structure. At night, each of these arches will be fully illuminated. As the studio explains, the new bridge is "more than a simple replacement thoroughfare."
