The Renovation Dickmansstraat was undertaken for clients who hoped for additional interior space that would establish a comfortable relationship with the backyard. It would have been easy for vanOmmeren Architects to build a protruding box, however, this would certainly have taken away from the space and atmosphere of the gorgeous little garden.
The solution for the Haarlem, Netherlands, home was to assemble nearly shed-like structure that would appear lightweight and breezy. With windows spanning the entire side of the structure, the indoor room and the outdoor court seem to open up to each other and overlap. The highlight of the Renovation Dickmansstraat, however, is the unique roofline treatment. More sun is brought in by triangular skylights in the creatively plaited ceiling of alternating slopes.
