Red Button Design's Midomo Bracelet Provides Potable Water

Red Button Design is an internationally-acclaimed design company that creates products for the humanitarian industry. (Yes, it’s an industry.)

United Kingdom’s Amanda Jones, who is described on the Red Button Design website as a "pro-profit social entrepreneur," is the commercial director who started out as an arts student. On the design front is James Brown, technical director and social design entrepreneur. Jones and Brown founded Red Button Design in 2006.

With a slogan like "Design Against Dependency," we can easily see that Red Button Design means business. And a profitable business at that. In 2009, Jones won a ethical enterprise "Woman of the Year" award from Cosmopolitan Magazine. Both Jones and Brown are members of the Courvoisier The Future 500 and Striding Out Future 100.

Red Button Design’s latest venture is the Midomo bracelet. It is part of a well-marketed celebration for the launch of the Midomo water purifier designed for developing countries. The limited-edition charm bracelet was handmade by jewelry designer Alex Monroe, who makes beautifully organic nature-inspired gold and silver accessories. Midomo, which used to be called the Reverse Osmosis Sanitation System (ROSS), is designed for households and powered by the turning of the wheels, in order to provide safe drinking solutions on-the-go. Since many people in developing countries have to travel to and from their water sources (sometimes walking miles and miles), the Midomo purifies the water as the user rolls from the source, back to their home. Once finished, the water is up to the World Health Organization’s standards.

For every bracelet bought, one Midomo water purifier will be donated to an African community. What’s more, each bracelet has a serial number that allows the owner to log in online and follow the story of what each purifier is doing.

Red Button Design makes it clear that this is the "perfect Christmas present," and hopefully, will incite many to trade in their normal holiday shopping routine for one that focuses not simply on the act of giving to your friends and family, but the act of giving to those less fortunate than you.
