Sustainable Rattan Chairs

WEND Uses Rattan for Furniture That Promotes Rainforest Protection

WEND, a design studio that's based in Oakland, California, crafts furniture "that [has] the highest level of social and environmental commitment available, without ever sacrificing aesthetics" -- a goal that's carried in the company's collection of rattan chairs and home accessories.

Each of the pieces is constructed with a handwoven technique that intermingles an Indonesian inspiration with a contemporary Californian look. In order to create the rattan chairs, WEND designers Michelle Plante and Genevieve Bandrowski were assisted by a family of professional weavers in Java -- an Indonesian island where the material is plentiful. The resulting furniture pieces are completely unique and make use of a sustainable material that aids in WEND studio's goal of protecting the rainforest.
