Bound Back Seating

The Purist Chair by Elisa Honkanen is a Seat Stripped Down to the Essentials

At this point, the assembly of a single seat exposes few surprises, making products like the Purist Chair by Elisa Honkanen a great deal more intriguing. The designer took up the challenge of reducing the amount of hardware necessary to keep the piece together, resulting in a wonderfully wound-up structure using a bit of neoprene cord.

Four smooth wooden sticks were slipped through the simple rounded seat, requiring just two screws to stay fixed together. Because of the angles of their installation, the front legs come up and cross the rear posts closely, allowing them to be bound together. The back and forth looping technique of the cable creates a firm but forgiving backrest for the Purist Chair by Elisa Honkanen.
