Pura Vida Empowers the Poor Through Create Good Foundation

While the most famous coffee company in Seattle is unquestionably Starbucks, Pura Vida Coffee, certified by B Corporation, offers something different, something more. Big bucks isn’t its goal. Instead, Pura Vida Coffee, founded in 1998, strives to serve the poor.

In terms of products, Pura Vida doesn’t only sell coffee: they also have tea, Divine Chocolate and wine from vineyards in Puget Sound, Washington like Red Mountain, Ciel du Cheval and Boushey. Pura Vida’s coffee is organic, shade-grown and fair trade. Pura Vida sells Choice Organic Teas due to their commitment to growers, as the first tea crafter in the United States to be Fair Trade Certified. Pura Vida encourages its customers to know more about what’s behind their products, for instance where and by whom it was grown.

Proceeds from each Pura Vida purchase helps to fund Create Good Foundation, which is Pura Vida’s charitable partner that supports economic infrastructure and clean water projects in Nicaragua, Mexico, Costa Rica, Peru and Guatemala. In Nicaragua, Create Good Foundation is currently creating wells and constructing latrines; and in Guatemala, they are committed to providing water filtration to the many households that are without. Some of their economic infrastructure projects include: women’s health training and coffee roasting business in Oaxaca; business opportunities for the disabled in Peru; education facilities and computer training centers in Guatemala; and the list goes on.

Pura Vida mixes business and charity with a successful, profitable and charitable outcome. Create Good Foundation isn’t just Pura Vida’s charitable partner. According to the Pura Vida website, it’s more than that—it’s their overall mission and mantra. Pura Vida makes more than coffee; they make cause-driven coffee.
