The PUNK: Chaos to Couture Exhibit is Making Serious Waves

The Met's spring 2013 Costume Institute exhibition aptly titled PUNK: Chaos to Couture pays homage to groundbreaking punk fashion and its enduring impact on haute couture culture since the style's birth in the early 1970s. Showcasing nearly 100 designs for men and women, the exhibition features an eclectic array of styles ranging from vintage bricoleur (amateur, DIY, punk trendsetters) garments to current high-fashion concepts.

The multimedia exhibition opens in the replica New York CBGB bathroom where punk rock music legends, like the Ramones, blare loudly through the space. Visitors then move into the venue's four different galleries, featuring the designers' four different expressions of the alternative DIY aesthetic. From Hardware to Bricolage, to Graffiti and Agitprop and finally DIY Destroy, each manifestation expands the parameters of fashion and questions the artificiality of trash and consumer culture.
