Norwegian studio Lund Hagem recently constructed a holiday home with a unique design that protects against extreme weather. While the idea of living on the edge of a cliff may not appeal to everyone, this home uses the unusual environment to its advantage.
The cliffside home is located in Sandefjord on Norway's south-east coast. The home sits between two weathered boulders that tower overhead. The home features glazed walls and a free-spanning concrete roof that slopes down in the same direction as the cliff. The roof is equipped with built-in stairs that allow it to double as a viewing platform for the home's residents.
While the design appears unusual from afar, the unique construction protects against extreme weather conditions. As the architects explain, "The project began as an idea for how to utilize a naturally sheltered area surrounded by large rocks and dense vegetation."
