The 'Protected Paradise' installation looks like an innocent rainbow at first glance but quickly looks menacing when you get closer. Spiked barbs stick out of every inch of the rainbow in a chaotic display. Artist Ole Ukena created her hazardous rainbow solely out of colored barbed wire to make it alarming to viewers. Though the installation looks harmless from afar, the barbed wire gives the sculpture a dangerous edge when you take a closer look.
Ukena created the installation in an effort to make a statement about our perception of paradise. According to the artist, "Paradise seems to be protected by a layer of limitation as well. The initial attraction turns into repulsion." Though the rainbow may initially look bright and cheery, it becomes an object of abhorrence when you finally get to it.
