Car Key-Connected Breathalyzers

A Portable Breathalyzer is Being Developed by Honda and Hitachi

The prevalence of drunk driving is being targeted by major brands as something that can be avoided with use of a new portable breathalyzer. Being developed by Honda and Hitachi, the device would connect to a smart car key and disable the engine from starting if the user has had too much to drink.

Traditional interlock technology ignitions require drivers to sit in the driver's seat and try their hand at starting the vehicle. This, the companies argue, tempts the driver to drive, so the new portable breathalyzer would cut them off from the idea before even entering the vehicle.

The device would be about the size of a smartphone and is currently in prototyping phases now with hopes to release it commercially in the near future.
