'Pine Tree Ballads' Consists of Haunting Photos of a Vacation Spot

'Pine Tree Ballads' is a mysterious and haunting photo series put together by Richmond-based photographer Paul Thullin. The photographs purport to capture a family on vacation in a place called Gray's Point, just off the coast of Maine. However, many of the photos do not include people at all, presenting instead ominous foreboding scenes of the woods and seemingly uninhabited structures. Even when people do appear in the photos, their presence is distinctly discomforting as they peer towards the viewer like ghostly creatures descended from another dimension.

The place in which Pine Tree Ballads is set actually represents the Thullin family's vacation spot for over a 100 summers. The attachment and close association felt by Thullin and his family towards the place informs and enhances his ability to depict it as a place where the real and the imagined cross paths in fantastical fashion.
