Sizable Wavy-Roofed Arts Centers

Mecannoo's Performing Arts Facility Spans 141,000 Square Meters

Architecture firm Mecanoo completes the world's largest performing arts facility in Taiwan. Referred to as 'Weiwuying' — a nod to the neighboring park, the newly opened venue boasts 141 square meters of space, capped by a 34,843-square-meter roof.

The National Kaohsiung Centre for the Arts houses a total of five performance venues. Four of them are indoor and include a 2,236-seat opera, a 1,981-seat concert hall, a 434-seat recital hall, and a 1,210-seat playhouse. The fifth entertainment area is situated on the performing arts facility's roof. The wavy construction of the top allows for the roof to gently and seamlessly dip down to touch the ground. This space faces the park, creating an efficient dynamic between the outdoors and the National Kaohsiung Centre for the Arts.
