Vibrant Volcano-Inspired Buildings

This Performing Arts Building Includes Several Concert Venues

British architecture firm Heatherwick Studio is designing a gorgeous new performing arts building that is inspired by volcanic landscapes.

The Hainan Performing Arts Centre will be situated on the Chinese island of Hainan, and will comprise a number of volcano-shaped structures that will be sheathed in eyecatching hues. With a grand total capacity of 3,800 people, the Hainan Performing Arts Centre will comprise a concert hall, theater and an opera house, making it a true center of performing arts excellence in the southern most point of China.

Eliot Postma, partner and group leader at Heatherwick Studio, noted that while opera houses typically only appear to stir when performances are taking place, "we wanted to create a space that is an extension of the city and will contribute to life on the street throughout the day."
