It might not look like it at first glance, but Paula Santos Arquitectura's design for a home in Porto, Portugal, is surprisingly similar to the other homes that were first built in the surrounding neighborhoods. The home is clearly a modern one, with a blank and monolithic white facade punctuated by sharp gaps for windows, but many of the architectural aspects of the home are a result of the designers sticking to old forms.
For example, the passageway along the side of the home is the same layout as traditional Porto family homes, as is access to a rear courtyard. In building the new home, Paula Santos Arquitectura tore down one of those traditional abodes, so these gestures are a clear homage to the styles that were being destroyed in the process of creating anew.
