Orkney Distillery Was Given Funding to Develop Low-Carbon Technology

The Orkney Distillery, a craft distillery based in Scotland, was recently awarded a portion of the government’s £390m fund to develop low-carbon technologies that will reduce the amount of carbon dioxide emissions released in the brewing industry.

The Orkney Distillery plans to run on hydrogen that is formed from renewable energy as opposed to liquid petroleum gas. Moreover, the project will use renewable electricity to power an electrolyzer -- a device that is able to split water into hydrogen and oxygen components. The low-carbon project is projected to reduce 86 tonnes of carbon emissions annual which is equivalent to the emissions from 18 cars or 10 homes.

Lord Duncan, the climate change minister, said: "It’s great to know we can all enjoy an environmentally friendly tipple while helping our planet as we press towards a net-zero emissions economy by 2050." This project could revolutionize the brewing industry to become more sustainable internationally.
