VR-Preserved Historic Spaces

Google's Open Heritage Program Revives Sites with Virtual Reality

Google Arts and Culture has already rolled out several combinations of art and technology, but its recent Open Heritage feature takes a break from artwork and focuses on amazing historical sites. This new project is being accomplished in a partnership between Google and nonprofit CyArk. The experience leverages VR technology to showcase 26 world heritage sites in 18 different countries and also provides information on each location.

The Open Heritage project is clearly a powerful educational tool, but the initiative is more focused on preserving at-risk monuments. By capturing these monuments in a VR space, Google and CyArk hope to keep these monuments for future generations in a virtual reality environment. Each monument is rendered into the Open Heritage project through 3D laser-scanning technology developed by CyArk.
