Coates Design Architects have completed the 'Olympia Residence' in Yelm, Washington.
In an area that is overwhelmingly traditional, this home sticks out like a sore thumb. Coates Design Architects came up with a way to incorporate nature and contemporary design into one structure. The main room, which is paneled in birch, is bordered by floor-length glass windows that overlook the surrounding wetlands and foothills. The house, which acts like giant terrarium, proves that modern elements can work harmoniously with nature. In fact, the distinction between indoors and outdoors melts together thanks to the interior concrete flooring extending to the outdoor patio area.
Most importantly, the house is built according to the Coates Design Architects code of sustainable architecture. For instance, the floors are fashioned from soycrete-stained concrete, the home allows for natural ventilation and all of the lighting is CFL and LED.
