Playhouse by Dietrich Wegner Reworks War Imagery

At first glance, the puffy little clouds created by Pennsylvania-based artist Dietrich Wegner make me all squiggly inside with joy. The combination of a fluffy mushroom cloud and the treehouses of my childhood reminds me of cotton candy and happy days gone by. But then the shape begins to take form in my mind, and I’m a little thrown off balance by its resemblance to the cloud formations created in nuclear aftermath.

Based on the concept that "we experience a contradiction between what our eyes enjoy and what our mind knows," Playhouse is a "place of escape, imagination, and comfort and a question to how mindful we are of the consequences of our actions," says Dietrich Wegner.

Wegner’s art incorporates images that articulate the confusion between the intentions, outcomes and ideals of his world; simultaneously, it forces itself upon the spaces within beauty, fantasy and reality, bringing all three into combustible fruition.
