For the launch of Adam McKay’s Don’t Look Up, Netflix and Sotheby’s teamed up to create a custom New Balance 550 sneaker. The one-of-a-kind sneaker sets itself apart with a design that features fragments of the pallasite meteorite, recovered from the Russian river of Hekandue.
Matt Burgess of MattB Customs created the sneakers using a high-pressure water jet to precisely cut the meteorite pieces to fit the contours of the shoe. The inclusion of the 4.5 billion-year-old pallasite meteorite pays tribute to Jennifer Lawrence’s character Kate Dibiasky, an astronomy grad student, who makes a breakthrough discovery with her professor of a comet that is on a direct collision course with Earth. There are 34 fragments of the ancient, extra-terrestrial crystals in the special edition sneaker.
