Facial Payment Trials

NEC Japan is Trialing a Facial Recognition Payment System for Employees

Biometric verification processes are becoming increasingly commonplace in technology, and NEC Japan, the giant IT company, is attempting to unlock the next (and potentially ultimate) step in that progression. According to an announcement, NEC Japan will soon begin trialing a facial recognition system for payments -- in other words, rather than using a credit card or cash, people in the NEC Japan trial will be able to pay through the system recognizing their faces.

The NEC Japan trial is being tested with around 1,400 employees working for two different Japanese finance companies. Those employees will link their facial data to their preferred payment option (e.g. credit, debit,) and the system will automatically pay for them when they make purchases within their companies' buildings.
