MyHeritage now lets you animate old family photos using deepfakery

MyHeritage is a new deepfake software that allows users to animate their old family photos. The new feature – appropriately called 'deep nostalgia' – will allow users to upload photos of someone to see the face animated by the algorithm. Since its launch, users have taken to social media platforms to showcase the appearances of their relatives from lifetimes ago.

The deep nostalgia feature on MyHeritage is free to use, however, fans must create an online portfolio and agree to the platform's terms and privacy policy. The facial animation feature is powered by D-ID, an Israeli company TechCrunch Disrupt battlefield alum that maps facial features from the photo for a live portrait.

"The Live Portrait solution brings still photos to life. The photo is mapped and then animated by a driver video, causing the subject to move its head and facial features, mimicking the motions of the driver video," D-ID said in a press release. "This technology can be implemented by historical organizations, museums, and educational programs to animate well-known figures."
